Comparable to the Navajo skinwalker, in ancient Mesoamerican beliefs, a nahual (sometimes spelled nagual) is a human being who can transform into an animal form either physically or spiritually. The most common transformations talked about are jaguars and pumas, but other animal transformations are discussed, such as donkeys, birds, dogs, or coyotes. Even today in rural Mexico, the nahual is the same as a brujo, or “wizard.” They are believed to be humans who can shapeshift into an animal at night, drink blood from human victims, steal property, cause disease, and conduct other nefarious activities.[i] In certain circles and beliefs, Nahuals have even been linked with UFO phenomena.
Ardy Sixkiller Clarke is a professor emeritus at Montana State University and ufologist who spent seven years traveling through Belize, Honduras, Guatemala, and Mexico collecting stories of encounters with aliens, Sky People, giants, and other strange entities from the indigenous people of those areas. She has collected these stories in a book entitled Sky People: Untold Stories of Alien Encounters in Mesoamerica.
One of these stories details an encounter told by an individual named Alonzo. In the account, Alonzo describes frequently finding his cattle dead and drained of blood. He states the mutilations happen without teeth marks from animals. In fact, he said, “Whoever or whatever is attacking my cattle knows about doctoring. They cut out the eyes perfectly. Like they were trained to do it.”[ii]
Alonzo’s wife, Julia, also mentions that UFOs are spotted on nights the cattle are killed. Julie also states some people in the area believe a nahual is to blame for the cattle mutilations. One of the UFO witnesses, a man named Alberto whom Alonzo hired to watch the cattle at night, claims when the UFO arrived, it caused pain all over his body to the point that he passed out. He did not immediately tell Alonzo about the UFO. At first, Alberto did not recognize the experience as something related to the UFO phenomenon. In fact, Alberto said he was afraid he had been cursed by the devil. It is interesting that an encounter such as this would be equated with the ultimate evil in creation.
Wall Walkers
Aspects of certain accounts can come across as if they are modern science fiction. What we would think of teleportation and hyperspace today would have been considered as godlike abilities in the ancient past. In fact, even today in areas around the world untouched by modern technology, these abilities are still considered as telltale signs of spiritual deity.
As Ardy Sixkiller Clarke points out in Sky People, tales of gods being able to pass through solid objects are numerous throughout the world. There is a legend of the Mesoamerican deity Quetzalcoatl in which he walks to a mountain and enters it, and the mountain closes behind him. There is a wide variety of legends of otherworldly beings who can pass through solid structures. Ancient Peruvian myths tell of beings who can walk through walls to access other realms of existence. Clarke includes an eyewitness account of such an event in her book.
Alexandro, eighteen years old at the time of the incident, would frequently spend time near an abandoned Maya city near his village with his friends. One of these occasions was unlike any other. When they approached their usual meeting place, they all first noticed a strange and unpleasant odor surrounding the area. As they walked out from the tree canopy into the plaza of the deserted city, they noticed a craft on the ground in the middle of the plaza. Alexandro describes the craft as “a long, dull, dark metallic craft.”[iii] Next, they saw what Alexandro describes as “the space men.” There were four of them. They were dressed in suits that were the same gray color as the craft. The beings were tall, thin, and had light hair upon unusually high foreheads. When they moved around the site, their suits would match the environment around them, similar to a type of camouflage. When they were close to the craft, the suits were gray. When they were near the trees, the suits would match the color of the trees.
Alexandro and his friends remained hidden and watched the creatures. After a few minutes, they saw them approach the stairs to a nearby temple. The shock came to the friends when they witnessed the things walking through the stairs as opposed to climbing them. The friends were familiar with the area and knew that underneath the temple was a cave. Therefore, they decided to go inside the temple through an entrance they were aware of in order to access the cave and see what the “space men” were doing. Before they could start to make their way to the temple, however, the beings reappeared. While remaining hidden in the foliage, Alexandro and his friends could hear the aliens talking to one another in an unfamiliar language. Next, they saw the creatures approach a different temple, this one smaller and overgrown with vegetation, located behind the main plaza temple. Alexandro and his friends followed them as they walked through the smaller temple.
At this point, Alexandro and his friends decided to inspect the craft while the living things were preoccupied in the temple. As they approached the craft, however, the beings reappeared in front of them, blocking their path. The space men immediately disappeared again. Less than a minute later, the craft ascended into the sky. Within seconds, it was gone.
One of Alexandro’s friends, Jean, interpreted the event as a sign from God. He believed the entities were angels who were sent to tell them they needed to make better life choices. After the experience, Jean decided to give up alcohol. Alexandro, on the other hand, interpreted the event differently. He believes they were Star Men, sometimes called Sky People. According to his interpretation, these are beings who come from the stars and return to the stars. However one decides to interpret this account, it seems apparent there is more going on below the surface concerning these otherworldly beings, their abilities, and the technology they seem to possess.

Wheel UFOs
A repeated UFO description in Clarke’s Sky People might have commonality with a description of an otherworldly event found in the Old Testament of the Bible. Even Clarke herself claims to have seen a UFO. She describes the experience in Sky People as such:
Suddenly, a large, circular, rotating wheel-like craft appeared overhead. I watched speechless as the revolving wheel disappeared toward the east, and the sun appeared in its saffron glory.[iv]
Later in her book, Clarke interviews a man named Mateo about a UFO he once saw. Similar to Clarke’s description, Mateo says the craft was “circular, but like a brightly colored wheel.”[v] Later, Mateo adds to his description, saying the craft was “shaped like a bicycle wheel.” He then claims to have been hypnotized by the craft.[vi] Mateo’s friend Eduardo then recounts his experience with seeing UFOs, describing two of them:
The big one was round like a bicycle tire. It was hollow on the inside. It rotated. The smaller one was a circular craft. It came out of the big one.[vii]
Strangely enough, there is a similar description of something otherworldly found within the pages of the Bible. Ezekiel 1:15–21 states:
Now as I beheld the living creatures, behold one wheel upon the earth by the living creatures, with his four faces.
The appearance of the wheels and their ork was like unto the colour of a beryl: and they four had one likeness: and their appearance and their work was as it were a wheel in the middle of a wheel.
When they went, they went upon their four sides: and they turned not when they went.
As for their rings, they were so high that they were dreadful; and their rings were full of eyes round about them four.
And when the living creatures went, the wheels went by them: and when the living creatures were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up.
Whithersoever the spirit was to go, they went, thither was their spirit to go; and the wheels were lifted up over against them: for the spirit of the living creature was in the wheels.
When those went, these went; and when those stood, these stood; and when those were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up over against them: for the spirit of the living creature was in the wheels.
When we read about the wheels Ezekiel saw, at first glance it would seem he was describing a mechanical craft of some sort. The truth is, however, far stranger. The word “wheels” used in the passage from the book of Ezekiel was translated from the Hebrew word owphan, which is where we get the plural ophanim.[viii] By itself, the Hebrew word ophanim simply means “wheels” and doesn’t denote anything necessarily extraordinary. Many times, this word is used for regular, earthly wheels, such as those found on normal, human-made chariots.[ix] This word was also used to describe the wheels of the ten bases beneath the lavers in Solomon’s Temple.[x] However, taken in the context of this passage, Ezekiel is describing something quite different than earthly, man-made wheels; he is describing an actual angelic being.
The word “rings” from Ezekiel 1:18 comes from the Hebrew word gab and means “rim (of a wheel).”[xi] Ezekiel was describing the rims of these wheels, even saying they were “full of eyes.” There is a popular interpretation of this within supporters of ancient astronaut theory stating that the eyes were most likely windows of a craft. At first, this may seem plausible. After all, Ezekiel was trying to describe something he had never seen before and would use the best terms he could to describe it. The problem with this, however, is if Ezekiel was trying to describe windows, he could have just as easily used the Hebrew word challown, which literally means “window.”[xii] Ezekiel had access to far simpler and more descriptive Hebrew words that he could have used if he was trying to describe something other than what is presented in the text. Simply speaking, when Ezekiel wrote that he saw eyes, it was most likely because he saw eyes.
Ezekiel 1:19–21 tells us the true nature of the ophanim. These were not merely inanimate wheels; they were actually alive. We know this because Ezekiel tells us the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels. The wheels themselves acted as a type of body for the spirits. The wheels were not just mechanical constructs. The wheels had life in them.
There are ancient texts that actually refer to the ophanim as a specific class of angel. In the book of Enoch can be found one of these references:
And He will summon all the host of the heavens, and all the holy ones above, and the host of God, the Cherubic, Seraphin and Ophannin, and all the angels of power, and all the angels of principalities, and the Elect One, and the other powers on the earth (and) over the water On that day shall raise one voice, and bless and glorify and exalt in the spirit of faith, and in the spirit of wisdom, and in the spirit of patience, and in the spirit of mercy, and in the spirit of judgement and of peace, and in the spirit of goodness, and shall all say with one voice: “Blessed is He, and may the name of the Lord of Spirits be blessed for ever and ever.”[xiii]
The idea of the ophanim being an actual class of angel is not a new or altogether uncommon idea. The Sephardic Jewish philosopher and astronomer Maimonides wrote that the ophanim are the second class in the hierarchy of angels.[xiv] Pseudo-Dionysius, in the fourth or fifth century, wrote that the ophanim are among the first sphere of the angelic hierarchy.[xv] We can see these wheels in other books of the Bible as well:
I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne was like the fiery flame, and his wheels as burning fire. (Daniel 7:9)
One thing is for sure: If the ophanim are indeed a class of angel all their own, heaven and its inhabitants are far stranger than we are traditionally led to believe. This also brings up some interesting questions concerning the fallen angels mentioned in the Bible. Is it possible different angels from different classes fell? Could there have been a rebellious group of ophanim that fell? Could this explain at least some of the UFO sightings today? Is it possible that certain UFOs might actually be alive?

Early Explorers and Giants
In his groundbreaking book, Genesis 6 Giants, Stephen Quayle points out how giants were a worldwide phenomenon in antiquity and can be found in myths and legends from all ancient cultures. From an early history book written by Edward B. Tylor and quoted in Genesis 6 Giants:
Tales of giants and monsters, which stand in direct connection with the finding of great fossil bones, are scattered broadcast over the mythology of the world. Huge bones, found at Punto Santa Elena, in the mouth of Guayaquil, have served as a foundation for the story of a colony of giants who dwelt there.
The whole area of the Pampas is a great sepulcher of enormous extinct animals; no wonder that one great plain should be called the “Field of the giants,” and that such names as “the hill of the giant,” “the stream of the animal,” should be guides to the geologist in his search for fossil bones.[xvi]
As we can see, the ancient world was very familiar with the idea of giants. In fact, as Quayle explores in Genesis 6 Giants, even early explorers recorded run-ins with giant beings. From Genesis 6 Giants:
At the time of the Spanish conquest, Bernal Diaz was told of the huge stature of these giants as well as their crimes. To show him how big they were, the story tellers brought him a bone of one of them, which he measured himself against, and it was as tall as he, who was a man of reasonable stature. He and his companions were astonished to see those bones, and held it for certain that there had been giants in that land.
Interestingly enough, Magellan’s fleet encountered giants when they approached Port San Julian. They saw a native giant on the beach waiting for them. Antonio Pigafetta, one of the crewmen with Magellan, described the giant in his later writings: “This man was so tall that our heads scarcely came up to his waist, and his voice was like that of a bull.”[xvii]
Later, in 1578, Sir Francis Drake anchored in the same place and described men well over seven feet tall. Anthony Knyvet visited the same area in 1592 and wrote of men who were ten to twelve feet tall. In 1615, crewmen from the Dutch schooner Wilhelm Schouten discovered and excavated several skeletons ten to eleven feet tall. As his log records, in 1764 when Commodore Byron visited the area, he encountered men “of a gigantic stature.” One of his officers wrote “some of them are certainly nine feet, if they do not exceed it.”[xviii] This was the last recorded sighting of giants in the area, but as Quayle points out in Genesis 6 Giants, the fact there is such a wide array of sightings by many different people makes it difficult to argue this was a hoax or mistaken identity.[xix]
Of course, as some skeptics have pointed out, on the surface there seems to be a problem with the idea of giants existing at all, during any time period, anywhere on earth. Quite simply, where are the bones? Surely, if giants were as prevalent in the ancient world as ancient myths and legends describe, it would seem we would find their bones all over the place. Well, as researchers and authors have pointed out concerning the bones of the giants, there might be more to the story.
As it turns out, there is good reason to believe a familiar organization may be actively involved in a grand-scale cover-up, set in place to hide the bones of giants to suit their own needs and to keep the public ignorant, unaware, and uninterested. While this might sound like nothing more than conspiracy talk at first, when one travels down this specific path of discovery, the evidence becomes increasingly overwhelming.
