One of the most detailed accounts of giants in Peru was written by renowned conquistador and chronicler Pedro Cieza (pronounced see-es-a) de Leon who recorded a popular legend among the natives concerning giants that landed on the peninsula of Santa Elena The natives say that the giants were so large that a man of common stature measured only up to their knees. When the giants landed at Santa Elena they built massive houses and dug extremely deep wells. Eugenics And Its Victims: Why Buck v. Bell Still Matters

As John Stonestreet often says, “ideas have consequences and bad ideas have victims.” One such victim was Carrie Buck. She was the “Buck” in Buck v. Bell, the notorious 1927 Supreme Court decision that upheld Virginia’s statute permitting compulsory sterilization for those deemed to be “feebleminded” and “unfit.” In his majority decision, Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., wrote that, “It is better for all the world, if . . . society can prevent those who are manifestly unfit from continuing their kind.” He then concluded by saying, “three generations of imbeciles are enough.” The “imbeciles” Holmes referred to were Buck, her mother, and Buck’s infant daughter. But as Adam Cohen tells readers in his recent book, “Imbeciles: The Supreme Court, American Eugenics, and the Sterilization of Carrie Buck,” there was nothing wrong with Carrie Buck, her mother, or her daughter. In 2017, whether the general population is aware of it or not — we are well on our way to genetically engineering humans. We are living in a society where non-genetically modified oranges wil be sold in one aisle and a genetically modified child in the next. Opponents talk about the dangers of genetic modifications gone wrong, or the dystopian prospect of wealthy parents ‘ordering’ genetically perfect “designer babies.” “Even unambiguously therapeutic interventions could start us down a path towards non-therapeutic genetic enhancement,” a group of scientists wrote in Nature in March. They told their colleagues around the world: “Don’t edit the human germ line.” But it may be too late. According to an anonymous researcher cited by Nature, at least four groups in China are working on genetically modifying human embryos. The MIT Technology Review reported that research groups at Harvard Medical School and at least one other centre in Boston are looking into so-called human germ line engineering, along with other scientists in China and the UK. NPR, August 2017: “[An] international team of scientists reports they have, for the first time, figured out a way to successfully edit the DNA in human embryos — without introducing the harmful mutations…” That article went on to say the research is ultimately aimed at helping families plagued by genetic diseases. I think that part is wonderful. I had an uncle by marriage who had a complex genetic disease that he unknowingly passed to his daughters; it shortened their lives by several decades. Breaking those defective genetic chains would be a boon to the human race. The potential issue is that DNA modification won’t stop there. What’s going to happen when someone says to the scientist repairing an embryo’s DNA, “While you’re at it, can you make him a giant?” Eventually, even the “while you’re at it” part will go away altogether and we know those requests will be accompanied by both pleas for understanding and the prospect of big rewards – “I always had a complex about my height and I’d also like to fund your new research hospital.” (READ MORE)
